Seeds – they may be teeny tiny, but life on earth depends on them! In this virtual session, students will work with a Gardens Educator to discover the amazing world of plant lifecycles, with a focus on seeds.
We’ll discuss different types of seeds before looking closely at their features, exploring their unique dispersal mechanisms and learning how scientists at the Australian PlantBank are safeguarding their future. Towards the end of the session, your Gardens Educator will conduct a live seed experiment for students to engage with.
After the excursion, students will be challenged to collect seeds local to them and conduct their own simple experiments!
- Students will test their knowledge of plant life cycles and the defining characteristics of plants
- Learn about the crucial role that seeds play in plant life cycles, and how scientists at the Australian PlantBank study them
- View and interact with live seed dispersal experiments, comparing different types of seeds and how they disperse in order to reproduce
