Food in Australia has developed over many years with varying influences to be a fusion of ingredients and flavours.

Investigate the traditional foods eaten by Aboriginal people and discover how diet has evolved in Australia since settlement. Examine how cuisine has been influenced by various cultures and revolved full circle to include indigenous ingredients now known as 'bush tucker'.

What Happens?

  • Explore the timeline of Food in Australia from its colonial starts to the international fusion of tastes and styles.
  • Appreciate the foods Aboriginal people of Australia ate and the popularity of these now.
  • Create new recipes by adapting old favourites to include indigenous tastes.
  • Participate in making and tasting these recipes.
  • Explore the self-guided Durag Aboriginal trail at the Garden to see the plants used by these local Aboriginal people.
  • Extend your visit in the Blue Mountains with a trip to The Fruit Bowl at Bilpin.
  • Pick locally grown fruit to take back to school to make into colonial style pies, or add indigenous flavours to create new recipes.

  • Appreciate the timeline of food in Australia from Aboriginal culture, to the numerous cultural groups who have settled here, to the reintroduction of indigenous ingredients into our cuisine to create 'bush foods'.
  • Explore the different types of traditional foods eaten by Aboriginal people; the methods of collection and processing and how the traditional diet was influenced by location.
  • Discover the beginnings of farming and the early colonial diet.
  • Appreciate and value the wide variety of foods available in Australia now and the contributions from a range of cultures.
