Students discover mapping and landscape features of the greater Blue Mountains.

Looking locally at the mountains and towards Sydney, they can identify landforms and places they may recognise. Use of observation and maps helps students discover how the environment supports the lives of people and other living things.

What Happens?

  • Watch a short movie showcasing the world heritage site of the Greater Blue Mountains. At the end the screen will disappear to expose the view of the mountains from the theatrette.
  • Identify places seen on the movie and in the vista using maps.
  • Discover the local area by identifying landforms, plants and places that are inhabited.
  • Create your own landscape using playdough and test if your landforms really function as they should.
  • Map your journey to the Blue Mountains using loose parts that have been collected.
  • Share your journeys with friends noting human impact as well as natural landforms.
  • Handle plants and use the senses to gain information about an environment.

Students Will...

  • Use geographical concepts about place, space and the environment.
  • Represent data using landform creations and draw conclusions about this.
  • Communicate geographical information regarding landforms, plants and human impact.
  • Use geographical tools such as maps, photographs and illustrations.
  • Participate in fieldwork.
